Baking!

Hello Loved-ones!

Today my roommate Kylee and I made sugar cookies and cards for all of our friends in celebration of Day Light Savings! We try to bake something for our friends once a month. Last time, we made cupcakes in honor of the first day of autumn. It is a lot of fun to make and decorate them, and most of all, give them away. 

The beaver cookie was an accident. It was the last of the dough, and it was in a position where we couldn't use the cookie cutter (cup). So we just baked it how it was and when it was done I thought, "wow, that really resembles a beaver." So, I decorated it accordingly and gave it to my friend, Andy. He thought it was pretty cool. : ) Kylee and I laughed about it for a while. 

I guess I should tell another baking story because you all might get a kick out of it. It IS a little embarrassing though. Oh well, here goes. 

So Kylee and I were going to make breakfast for our friends one Sunday morning before church. We decided that pancakes would be a good thing to make and would be easy to make. It was very early in the morning and neither one of us were very awake. Plus, we got up late so we were very rushed. 

We loaded up everything we needed and headed to the kitchenette in the lobby.  We made the batter and started the burner on the stove. Well, the burner was up too high apparently. 

We poured the batter on the skillet and there was some smoke. It's a tiny little kitchen. Tiny.

And! It has a smoke alarm! I'm serious, if I would have been at home I wouldn't have even opened the windows. But, sure enough the smoke alarm went off. Only in the lobby? Only in first floor? Oh no. Oh no. The alarm went off in every single hall in the entire dorm. The lights were flashing, and it was the loudest alarm I have ever heard in my entire life. 

So of course, we have no idea what to do. We're starting to freak out, girls were evacuating in their robes or towels or pajamas. Finally the security man shows up and turns the alarm off when he realizes it was only an innocent pancake that caused the ruckus. 

During the week, I overheard a few conversations of some girls that were pretty upset about waking up to the fire alarm. Oops......

So we did finish cooking breakfast. We were completely humiliated. It is pretty funny now. Really funny, actually. I guess it's just something that is BOUND to happen. Hopefully, this will be the only embarrassing i'm-a-freshman moment that I will have to experience. 

Knoxville is beautiful right now. The road leading to campus is lined with beautifully colored trees and campus itself is just as beautiful.

Graduate goes to college!

I'm really late getting these up. Here are a couple pictures from graduation.

Now I am at Johnson! I really like it. My roommate and I are getting along splendidly. Here are a few pictures that I took before room checks, so it's fairly organized ;).

Most of my classes are very interesting. I like (almost) all of my professors!

Basic Christian Beliefs

and of course, Chapel

The work load isn't overwhelming at all. There certainly is plenty of reading to do, but it isn't too bad. The classes have challenged my way of thinking, which I'm sure is a good thing. It is sometimes frustrating, but necessary. 

We are hosting a guest for preview days, so that is really exciting! I've been able to jump right into the field of study that I am getting into (Teaching English as a Second Language).  I am involved in a program called "Europe Right in Your Backyard".  I go with a group to a family from Ukraine's house to teach them English. I have enjoyed it. Soon Kylee, my roommate, and I will be getting our own family to work with by ourselves. I am a little nervous, but mostly excited about that. The family knows hardly any English, but are desperate to learn.

Music Camp's 20th anniversary was this past week. It made me think of Grandpa often. The choir sang "Jesus is All the World to Me" in memory of him. It was a good week, but different.

Camp

This summer I am working as staff at Oil Belt Christian Service Camp. It is pretty hard work, but it is fun because all of the staff are very nice people, and we have a common purpose.

Each year, there are new t-shirts. 

This is the first year that Oil Belt has had a summer without Grandpa Larry. That's 61 years. 

Back to the t-shirts.........

Every camp t-shirt has a sax on the right sleeve in memory of grandpa. 

We just got the shirts today, it was a very pleasant surprise.   

Also, the picture above was taken on my brand new MacBook. It was a graduation present from dad/scholarship money. It's sharp.

Abigail and I celebrated the nice weather that we were having a couple weeks ago by flying some kites and decorating our sidewalk. It was great fun.


Last Friday Abigail got her hair cut. She likes it a lot and I think it looks super cute. : )





This has been my favorite treasure as of late....an owl mug.

This is my friend Broch Thomas and I at his prom. It was quite fun and I really enjoyed it. My friend Jordyn very graciously let me borrow her dress. I'm very thankful.
